How to do it

  1. Rest a barbell across your upper back, lift it off the rack, and step back.
  2. Stand with the balls of your feet on a stable plate or step and your heels hanging off, or flat on the floor.
  3. Lower your heels slowly until you feel a stretch in your calves, without bouncing at the bottom.
  4. Rise as high as you can onto your toes with your knees straight but not locked, then lower under control.

Warm up first and pick a weight you can control through the whole movement. Stop if something hurts.
