How to do it

  1. Rest a barbell across your upper back, lift it off the rack, and stand facing a sturdy box or bench.
  2. Place one whole foot on top of the box, with your knee at about hip height or a little lower.
  3. Push through that foot to stand up on the box, keeping your torso upright and not pushing off your back foot.
  4. Step back down slowly, controlling the descent with the top leg, then switch legs.
  5. Start with a lower box and a lighter bar, because balance is harder with the weight on your back.

Warm up first and pick a weight you can control through the whole movement. Stop if something hurts.
